Merchant Navy Training Board
Developing volunteering teams to work in schools is a key part of EBC’s work. The MNTB wants to raise the profile of merchant navy careers with young people and we have been working with them to recruit, train and equip a cohort of serving merchant personnel to visit schools and give engaging and informative careers presentations to teenagers.

EBC has created the support programme for the volunteers, working with companies in the sector, Nautilus, the seafarers trade union, and the MNTB. A high calibre generic presentation using video and animations, plus essential careers information, is at the heart of the programme and it is suitable for use in schools or with a wide range of youth groups.

We created and delivered a training programme for the Ambassadors, which includes background knowledge about modern schools environments, careers education, and working with young people. Ambassadors were also trained in how to use the presentation and how to customise and personalise it.

The pilot phase has ended and been evaluated, and the project is now to be rolled out nationally. For more information about similar schools volunteering programmes, contact Mike Ahlquist on 01225 731420.
